  • The St. Helena Island Lighthouse is located approximately 10 miles west of the Mackinac Bridge. The light started operating in 1873 and was the first in Michgan to lose its keeper (automated in 1922). The Coast Guard recommended razing the lighthouse complex in the early 1980s but only the assistant keeper's house and boathouse were destroyed. The lighthouse is now under the care of the Great Lakes Lighthouse Keepers Association which is restoring the facility to its former glory. Straits of Mackinac, MI<br /> <br /> MI-110707-0391
  • Waugoshance Shoal Light was constructed in 1851 to mark the shoals extending from Waugoshance Point. It was built of brick and in 1883, sheathed with 3/8-inch thick steel. The light was decommisioned in 1912 and in the early 1940s became a target for practice bombing. Today it stands without some of the metal casing deteriorating and serving as a bird colony. There are efforts underway to stabilize and possibly restore the light. Note that one can see straight through the interior of the lighthouse. Straits of Mackinac, MI<br /> <br /> MI-110707-0338
