Caja de Muertos
There are several stories on how Caja de Muertos (Coffin Island) got its name. One of them has to do with the pirate Jose Almeida, whose wife died during a raid. It is said that Almeida embalmed his bride's body in a glass box protected by a copper coffin which he left on a cave in the deserted island. The island was given the name after a Spanish engineer found the cave with the coffin many years after Almeida was executed...or so the legend says.
The island, popular due to its beaches, is now a nature preserve. A lighthouse, completed in 1885, sits 297 feet above the water on a hill in the center of the island. Although still operational, the structure has been closed since 1945. Caja de Muertos, PR
