The St. Helena Island Lighthouse is located approximately 10 miles west of the Mackinac Bridge. The light started operating in 1873 and was the first in Michgan to lose its keeper (automated in 1922). The Coast Guard recommended razing the lighthouse complex in the early 1980s but only the assistant keeper's house and boathouse were destroyed. The lighthouse is now under the care of the Great Lakes Lighthouse Keepers Association which is restoring the facility to its former glory. Straits of Mackinac, MI

The light was decommisioned in 1912 and in the early 1940s became a target for practice bombing. Today it stands without some of the metal casing deteriorating and serving as a bird colony. Light Ripples
I was setup to photograph the Mackinac Island ferry as it left the island at the end of the day. The water was perfectly still with a clear reflection of the lighthouse and its light. After the ferry went by, the ripples it create broke the reflection creating the image above.
